2003 Lotus Esprit - First shown in concept form in 1974, the first Esprit went into production two years later sporting a 160-horsepower 2-liter engine. In 1981, the original engine was replaced by a turbocharged 2.2-liter engine producing 210 horsepower, giving the sleek coupe a top speed of 150 mph. In 1988 the Esprit got its first makeover, featuring softer lines and a horsepower upgrade to 228. In 1990 power went up to 280 horses, still from a turbocharged 4-cylinder power plant. After 20 years of tweaking the venerable 4-cylinder engine, Lotus chose to breathe new fire into the heart of the Esprit by introducing a twin-turbocharged V8 its first new motor in nearly 25 years. The result of a 27-month program that included the construction of 30 prototypes, the entirely new V8 engine elevated the Esprit to true supercar status, delivering a top speed of 178 mph.
